NFN Music Review – JASON GRAY: Land of the Living. (Centricity Music)

Nashville-based Jason Gray is one of those artists whose songwriting strongly reflects his personal life. Here we have his latest full lengther, twelve tracks of mostly upbeat pop country ccm, skilfully written, with sometimes painfully honest lyrics. Minnesota-born, Jason grew up on the road with his mother who was a singer in bar bands. At just six, as a result of his parents divorce he developed a stutter which has remained. His mother remarried, converted to Christianity and began singing in revival meetings. His stepfather became increasingly abusive, leading to his mother divorcing for the second time. Over the years Jason began working as a youth pastor, married, but sadly by 2015 his own marriage failed. Spending six years in full-time music ministry and releasing four albums independently, in 2007 he signed to a record label with several releases since. Gaining numerous awards and collaborating with a wide range of artists, Jason’s solo music has also developed. The opener ‘When I say yes’  includes a great ‘gospel choir’ backing, and describes how we only achieve our full potential as Christians when we say ‘yes’ to the challenges that God brings. The following track ‘When I grow up’ (“I wanna be a child again”) is equally strong but the same tempo so might have been better placed elsewhere. Things slow down and strip back for the acoustic guitar introduction to ‘Questions’ (“All the answers I thought I knew, I don’t know anymore”), acknowledging how it is often difficulties in life that lead us back to God as the only One who has the answers. A particular example of Jason’s ability as a songwriter is his mix of honesty and wry humour in ‘Jesus loves you (and I’m trying)’. ‘Be kind’ (“everyone you meet is fighting their own battles”) reminds us to consider the problems that other people we meet may be experiencing. The specially powerful ‘Worth staying for’ recounts his father’s abandonment of him as a child, and how he himself many years later went through the pain of divorce. Acknowledging how difficult this was to write, Jason says “I now see songwriting as trying to offer healing language to the world”. The hymn-like ‘Place for me’ (“Hallelujah, there’s a place for me in the company of sinners saved by grace”) has an earworm chorus. This is an album that is both lyrically and musically so consistent that I struggle to identify standout tracks. Together with above average sound quality, it gets 9/10. Dave Deeks.

Brandon Heath Releases His First Single Of 2024, “He Does (Oh By the Way)”; Launches “God Is Good” Headline Tour Feb. 15 Featuring Josh Wilson, Natalie Layne

Five-time GRAMMY®-nominated, eight-time GMA Dove Award recipient and Platinum®-selling singer / songwriter Brandon Heath releases his first radio single of 2024, “He Does (Oh By the Way).” Available at digital and streaming outlets everywhere today (Jan. 12) via https://fanlink.to/HeDoes, the song is the lead single from Heath’s eighth studio album and second LP with Centricity Music, The Ache, slated to release later this year.

A cleverly penned, choir-assisted song about God’s role as a consistent provider and faithful friend, joy is palpable on “He Does (Oh By the Way).” Heath wrote the single with Kyle Williams (We Are Messengers, TobyMac), who also produced the track.

“I was just thinking about all the things that we forget the Lord covers,” Heath says of the celebratory reminder. “He fills our needs in wild abundance and lavishes His love on us in crazy ways. We often just miss it. So this song was my fun, upbeat way of saying, ‘Oh, by the way, God does all that – He does.’”

He Does (Oh By the Way)” Chorus:

Oh He does

He does He does He does

Oh by the way He does

He is He was

What if it was true

Knows you more than you

He does He does He does He does

Oh by the way He does

He lives He loves

What if Jesus saves

Oh by the way He does

The new music follows a period of professional renewal that saw Heath release his first full-length project in five years, Enough Already, which returned him to the top of the charts with his sixth No. 1, “See Me Through It.”

The No. 1 Billboard Top Christian Albums Imprint for three consecutive years, Centricity Music continues to reach significant milestones as its artists receive multiple RIAA Platinum® and Gold® Certifications and their songs reach the top of the radio charts this year.

“The RIAA had 57 artists release and earn first-time Gold or Platinum awards in 2023,” shares Centricity Music CEO Caren Seidle. “Remarkably, Centricity Music artists account for six of these awards, plus two additional Platinum certifications for Lauren Daigle! This is a testament to the creativity and the dedication of our team at Centricity and the undeniable talent of our artists.”

Two-time GRAMMY Award winner Lauren Daigle became the first artist to hold the No. 1 spot atop the Hot Christian Songs Chart for an astounding 20 weeks twice, most recently with “Thank God I Do” from her current, self-titled album, and with “You Say,” which is also now certified 6x-Platinum. Earning 2x Platinum for “Rescue,” garnering two GRAMMY Award nominations and receiving her twelfth GMA Dove Award, Daigle also gathered her eighth Billboard Music Award and topped five billion streams this year.

Named 2023’s Gospel Music Association New Artist of the Year, Katy Nichole earned her first Gold and Platinum certifications for her BMI Christian Award-winning single “In Jesus Name (God of Possible),” which also spent 20-weeks atop the Hot Christian Songs Chart. She further made her FOX & Friends debut this month, appeared for the second time on the Grand Ole Opry, garnered her third No. 1 radio hit with her Recording Academy-featured “Hold On,” and shared the stage on successful tours with Tauren Wells, Jordan Smith and CAIN. In January she joins Winter Jam ’24, Christian music’s biggest arena tour.

Pop recording artist and songwriter Jordan Feliz quickly became a household name when his first radio single “The River,” the title track from his critically-acclaimed debut, became a smash hit. Spending an unprecedented 12 weeks at No. 1, the chart-topping single was named ASCAP’s “Christian Music Song of the Year” and has now garnered Feliz his first Platinum certification. Feliz’s current Top 10 hit, “The King Is Alive,” is the first single from his fourth full-length album (title and release date TBA).

With over 350 million on-demand streams, 80 million YouTube video views and more than a dozen radio hits, Unspoken garnered its first Gold for the No. 1 radio hit “Start A Fire” from the band’s 2014 self-titled debut. Internationally known North Point Worship earned Gold for its worship anthem “Death Was Arrested” from the Nothing Ordinary EP while singer, songwriter Diaz’s Gold came for his radio single “Breathe” from the Everything Is Changing EP.

Natalie Layne Named Pandora Top 10 New Artist To Watch; Pandora Features Layne On Times Square Billboard

Pandora Features Layne On Times Square Billboard

Layne Releases Amen (At The Piano) EP Dec. 15

Soul-inspired pop singer/songwriter, worship leader, accomplished pianist and producer Natalie Layne is named by Pandora in its 2024 Pandora Ten Artists To Watch campaign. This annual program highlights 10 of the most promising new recording artists. Previous year’s lists have featured success stories like Dua Lipa, Post Malone, The Kid LAROI and Tate McRae.

Following this month’s announcement, Pandora is set to support the 2024 Pandora Ten Artists To Watch on socials and on its platform editorially throughout the year. Additionally, this subscription-based music streaming service owned by Sirius XM Holdings is featuring Layne today (Dec. 8) in a Times Square billboard located in New York City on Broadway between 45th and 46th Streets.

Pandora’s billboard featuring Natalie Layne is running on Times Square.

“From note one, Natalie Layne grabs your attention and keeps it with bullseye lyrics, infectious melodies and riveting performances,” declares Pandora’s Melissa Chalos, Assoc. Director of Programming, Christian/Gospel. “And the fact that she’s practically a virtuoso on the keys makes her a true unicorn and the most compelling new artist in Christian music.”

Along with her six-song Centricity Music debut EP, Amen, which features the NewReleaseToday.com-featured hit radio single and CBN “Studio 5”-premiered video “Amen,” Layne has also re-recorded new piano and vocal versions of the EP. Her Amen (At The Piano) releases Dec. 15 and is available at digital and streaming outlets globally via https://fanlink.to/AMENatp.

Inspired by the simple kindness of a neighbor waving and smiling as they passed in her neighborhood, Layne co-wrote the title track with hit-making songwriters Benji Cowart and David Spencer. “Amen,” as well as the whole album’s sonic direction, is meant to be as welcoming as a friend and as cohesive as that of a seasoned artist, with the messages behind the music stemming from her personal experience.

All the latest Natalie Layne music, tour and more news can be found at: www.natalielayne.com, Spotify, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube and TikTok.

About Natalie Layne:

Singer, songwriter and producer Natalie Layne desires to radiate joy through her original music. With a master’s in commercial piano, Layne won Belmont’s Christian Showcase at her alma mater in 2019, leading her to sign an exclusive recording and publishing contract with Centricity Music. Prior to landing a record deal, Layne charted a successful path as an independent artist for six years during which she cultivated an impressive social following simply by inviting listeners into her songwriting process online. Moreover, she studied under GRAMMY® award-winning songwriter and producer Bernie Herms (Natalie Grant, Josh Groban, Barbra Streisand) through an apprenticeship that allowed her to shadow him for a semester. She’s sung background vocals for Natalie Grant on the Dove Awards stage and also lent BGVs to labelmate Jason Gray’s latest album. Additionally, she’s opened shows for Jeremy Camp, Chris Tomlin, Danny Gokey and We The Kingdom, among others, as well as headlined full band sets at Bonnaroo — twice. Leading worship since she was 12, the Colorado Springs native now resides in Nashville where she continues to lead at her local church. Her introductory EP, Amen, builds on her growing momentum, serving up six original songs — all co-penned by Layne.

Jason Gray Releases Land of the Living; 1st Full-Length Album in 3 Years Plumbs Depth of Human Experience

I now see songwriting as trying to offer healing language to the world…it’s about me trying to love my audience well.” – Jason Gray

Critically acclaimed singer/songwriter Jason Gray releases his full-length album, Land of the Living, today (Nov. 17) at digital and streaming outlets globally via https://fanlink.to/landoftheliving. On the new album, this beloved Centricity Music recording artist is less of a host and more of a participant in the stories he’s telling. Rather than leading listeners on a journey revolving around a central theme like he did with 2020’s Order Disorder Reorder, this album serves up a batch of pop-friendly, radio-ready contenders primed for conversation.

“Concept albums tend to ask something of the listener,” Gray says in regard to Land of the Livings predecessor. “This record is a little bit more, ‘Thank you for your attention. That was the meat. Let’s have a little dessert.’”

This cherry-on-top addition to his catalog is full of meaningful songs marked by Gray’s remarkable ability to plumb the depths of the human experience — all within the confines of a three-minute pop song.

For each of the dozen tracks on Land of the Living, there’s always one question Gray asks when he walks into a writing room: How do we tell the truth today? Yet, he proposes there’s another question that’s often a quicker route to the heart of the matter: What are we afraid to talk about today?

He discovered the answer to that question when he penned “Worth Staying For,” arguably the most personal song of his entire career. Written with Andy Gullahorn, the autobiographical selection uncovers Gray’s scars as he shares his core fear of abandonment, a wound inflicted in his childhood when his father left, and that was reopened years later during a painful divorce. “I was scared to release that one,” he confesses, “because as a writer, you don’t want to be the victim or the hero of your songs.” Gray ultimately holds himself accountable as he traces the trauma from its point of entry to the ways “pain will be transmitted if it doesn’t get transformed.”

Other topics he covers on Land of the Living aren’t nearly as heavy, yet, just like Gray, they’re exceptionally thoughtful. He excavates Psalm 27 on the title-cut, explores childlike wonder on “When I Grow Up,” celebrates biblical manhood on “Good Man” and wrestles with doubt on “Questions.”

Lead single “Place For Me,” produced and engineered by GRAMMY Award-winning Jeff Sojka (Jeremy Camp, Crowder) and mixed by Sean Moffit (Chris Tomlin, NEEDTOBREATHE), was birthed out of Gray’s own weighty baggage from the church, a place he’s ultimately found to be a refuge for the sinner and saint alike. “At its best, the church offers a place of belonging based on our need for grace, for each other, for help and for guidance,” Gray says of the message behind the upbeat offering he co-wrote with Matt Armstrong and Ethan Hulse. “It’s where different people, who don’t necessarily agree with each other, come together and manage to point their hearts in the same direction for a couple hours every week, and that’s beautiful.”

Land of the Living also features the tongue-in-cheek quirkiness of “Jesus Loves You (And I’m Trying),” the pop-centric “Be Kind,” and the Gospel-inflected, choir-assisted “When I Say Yes.”

The full Land of the Living track listing follows:

01) When I Say Yes

02) When I Grow Up

03) Questions

04) Jesus Loves You And I’m Trying

05) Be Kind

06) If You Don’t Move

07) Land Of The Living

08) Hold Onto Hope

09) Worth Staying

10) Good Man

11) See As You See

12) Place For Me

While his music has always given listeners a safe space to work out the details of life, faith and relationship, the veteran artist reveals that he finds himself writing from a different perspective on Land of the Living. “I now see songwriting as trying to offer healing language to the world,” Gray says. “It makes it less egocentric. It’s not about me expressing myself. Instead, it’s about me trying to love my audience well by writing words that might help them express things they need better language for.”

About Jason Gray:

Since his 2007 nationwide label debut, All the Lovely Losers, Gray has established himself as a true songwriter’s songwriter. He has garnered multiple ASCAP Performance Awards for popular songs like “Remind Me You’re Here,” “I’m Gonna Let It Go” and “Sparrows” and summited the radio charts with hits like his first No. 1 AC standard, “With Every Act of Love,” and chart-topping inspirational single, “Nothing Is Wasted.” Throughout his celebrated tenure, Gray has shared the stage with genre leaders like Michael W. Smith, Steven Curtis Chapman, Third Day, TobyMac, Lauren Daigle and others, in addition to headlining tours of his own. Moreover, he’s the host of the popular writers-round radio show Acoustic Storytime heard on SiriusXM The Message on the second Friday of every month at noon ET.

NFN Music Review – PATRICK MAYBERRY : Wild Faith. (Centricity Music)

Singer, songwriter and worship leader Patrick Mayberry releases his highly anticipated, first full-length Centricity Music album, Wild Faith. The main thrust of the song is to remind the listener that whatever we’re going through, we’re never alone with God in our lives. With the opening ‘Never Stop Singing’ there’s a celebration of that fact, on a very uplifting sound. The production on the early tracks are really full on, with a cacophony of sound, yet still giving room for Patrick’s vocals to shine through. On the title track, things get a bit slower with the claim that “Wild faith can’t be tamed, and is the better way.”  Crowder duets with Patrick on ‘Lead On Good Shepherd.’ The song really drives along with a terrific bridge; “Step by step, day by day; Lead me on, Lord I pray; Road gets dark, walk by faith; Lead on Good Shepherd.” Other great tracks  include the rousing ‘A Million Times,’ and ‘He Is.’ Indeed, as well as rousing there was a great joy to almost all the songs. A super album! 10/10.

Centricity Music Signs Multi-Platinum® Songwriter, Recording Artist Mack Brock; First Single, “Just Like You’ve Always Done,” Releases Friday, Nov. 3

Centricity Music announces the signing of Multi-Platinum® songwriter and worship leader Mack Brock. The first single releasing in the new partnership, “Just Like You’ve Always Done,” will be available, today, Friday (Nov. 3) at digital and streaming outlets internationally via https://fanlink.to/JLYAD.

“Centricity is excited to add Mack to its roster of artists and writers,” says Centricity Music CEO Caren Seidle. “He brings a legacy of writing, recording and performing music for believers and music lovers everywhere around the world, aligning perfectly with Centricity’s mission statement.”

“With over fifteen years of friendship and making music together, I am truly honored to join Mack in this new chapter of his life and music,” adds Centricity’s Director of A&R, James Duke. “Mack’s love of Jesus and heart for the Church is inspiring, and I can’t wait for the world to hear these songs.”

The anthemic “Just Like You’ve Always Done,” which was produced by GRAMMY-nominated Hank Bentley (Jeremy Camp, Crowder, Danny Gokey) and co-written with Bentley and Jessie Early, boasts of the consistency of God yesterday, today and forever.

“It’s the launching pad of what we believe,” Brock says of the fresh track. “He is the same as He’s always been. He’s the same God that’s the lead character in all the stories we’ve read in Scripture. He’s still working miracles.”

The strength of Brock’s new single and upcoming songs to be revealed from Centricity Music in the coming months rides on the hope he finds in the unfolding story his family is living. The South Carolina native and his wife, Meredith, who serves as the CEO of Proverbs 31 Ministries, have three children. From the unexpected joy discovered in foster parenting to leaving the known to pursue the unknown, Brock writes songs to remind his own heart and encourage others that there’s an all-knowing God who is sovereign over it all and is worthy of all our praise.

“With my music, I’m just trying to relive all the times God has shown up,” says Brock. “I want to use that as a catalyst to build my faith and, hopefully, encourage others in their faith as well.”

As a former, founding member of the GRAMMY Award-winning Elevation Worship, Brock co-wrote some of Elevation’s earliest hits, like RIAA certified double Platinum® single “O Come To The Altar,” Platinum-certified “Do It Again” and Gold® track “Resurrecting.” After a decade with the worship band, Brock released his debut, Greater Things, which garnered him a radio hit with the title-cut. The five-track Covered EP followed the next year, and 2020’s SPACE cemented Brock as a bonafide solo artist. He has also written songs recorded by Phil Wickham, Jesus Culture, Passion, Pat Barrett and Bryan & Katie Torwalt, among others.
