NFN New Music Review – BROOKE LIGERTWOOD : Bless God. (Capitol CMG)

Brooke needs no introduction, as she’s one of the most popular female artists around. I was looking forward to hearing this new EP, but my heart sank when I realised that it was filled with 5 versions of the same song. Still, on we go. The first version was recorded live from Passion 2024 and features Brandon Lake and Cody Carnes. The song itself is typical “big church” fodder – a contemporary worship song. The recording is very good and I could envisage the power of the live event. The second rendition is co-titled ‘Every Chance I Get,’ Was it a different song? Not really, it just seems to change into spontaneous worship. Then, we get to a Radio Version, followed by an Acoustic Version. By now, I was completely deflated by, what seemed to be, the same vocal track to yet another musical backing. In it’s own right, it’s a fine song, but the same thing, five times over was just too much for this reviewer to handle.  8/10 for the initial song, but 4/10 for the rest of it.

NFN New Music Review – Mac Powell : Like It’s Nothing. (Capitol CMG)

“I know it may sound crazy, but I still believe in miracles,” shares Mac Powell of the new song’s inspiration. “All of these amazing things that we read about in the scriptures – from God parting the Red Seas, Elijah calling down fire from Heaven, to Jesus healing with just a touch – I truly believe these things, in some ways, still happen. And God does not grow tired or weak in doing these mighty things. I pray we all will continue to have the kind of faith that sees God working today!” Beginning with a machine-gun drum intro, a blues guitar soon joins in. As Powell sings, he’s accompanied by a full sound, complete with a funky keyboard, too. In fact, once the backing singers join in, the song moves into rock gospel territory. Mac sings of God moving mountains and the fact that there’s nothing He can’t do. Sadly, the song is less than two and a half minutes long. Just as it gets going, it stops! There’s nothing wrong with the vocal quality, it’s typical Mac Powell, but not the best thing he’s ever recorded.   6/10.

NFN New Music Review – ELLIE HOLCOMB : All of My Days. (Capitol CMG)

All of My Days, is a beautiful collection of curated Psalms that have personally carried her through difficult times as well as played an encouraging role in the lives of her listeners through her “Memory Mondays” where she sings Scripture verses to songs each week. Songs on this release are backed by acoustic instruments, with the occasional strings and percussion added here and there. The title track is based on Psalm 23 which tells of dwelling in the house of the Lord, and giving thanks for His goodness and mercy. ‘Where Can I Go’ (Psalm 139) is a light song that swings gently along, with n engaging quality. Ellie’s vocals are crisp and clean throughout and, possibly at their best on ‘I Lift My Eyes (Psalm 121). It’s a reminder that the Lord watches over you day and night, wherever you may go. The tempo raises slightly on the folk influenced ‘My Heart is Steadfast’ (Psalm 108), where I found myself tapping my feet along to the rhythm. Finally, we get to ‘Thy Word’ (Psalm 119). It’s another delicate little song. Putting the meaning of the Psalms to music, Ellie has created a little gem of a release. My only disappointment was that there were only 7 tracks.   8/10.
