Landing in the space where One Direction meets TobyMac, 1 GIRL NATION is an exciting blend of upbeat, relevant pop music, with lyrics that are totally focused on living life for God, even while you’re young. 1GN, as they’ve already been dubbed, stars Carmen, Kayli, Kelsey, Lauryn Taylor, and Lindsey. These five 20-24 year-old girls have a passion for telling their fans about Christ through their music. Their first single ‘While We’re Young’ was released in July.
The Big Start 2, following in the heels of last year’s first volume is, according to the official website, “a brand new resource for all-age worship, helping families and congregations to start their day with a huge healthy dose of faith and feelgoodery”. Again it features songs from a variety of authors, some who are specialists in the genre, others who will be more familiar in a more adult oriented worship environment. So on the one hand we have songs from Doug Horley, such as “I Love You” (though Doug doesn’t do it in the funky way presented here) and Trevor Ranger (“You Rose Again”) mixed with songs such as Darlene Zschech’s “My Jesus, My Saviour”. The latter is quite a good version of the song with an original arrangement and an American gospel feel. I was also surprised to find that the version of “Happy Day” is not the Tim Hughes rewrite but the Edwin Hawkins original. It’s actually done quite well and the children’s backing choir make a commendable job of it. My favourite track though is “The Way That You See”, written be Steve Squires. This has been doing the rounds recently, not surprising as it’s a very good song, and the version here is as good as any you will hear. If I have one criticism it is that album all seems rather serious, lacking the more fun elements usually present on albums of this type. So whilst it hits its intended target in terms of faith it’s not quite there with the feelgoodery. Not a bad effort though. 7/10 Robin Thompson.
Well, not only does this young lady have the accolade of our Album of the Month, she has also put pen to paper and has published this blog style book! Basically, it’s Philippa’s testimony on how she struggled with so many things in life, until God came into her life. Through the people she met and the little coincidences that kept popping up, she gradually came to find her Saviour. As, I say, the book is written blog style. That is, there’s no long chapters, just short, sharp stories that will inspire you, make you laugh, and make you cry. Philippa doesn’t hold back. She bares her soul and tells you plain and simply how God changed her. Of course, there are still struggles and challenges, but Philippa comes out fighting, with God on her side. From visiting the poor of Haiti, to vocal coaching X factor style in Hong Kong, I found the book an engaging read, and highly recommend it to people young and old.
Here’s a refreshing sound from Dove Award Nominee trio, Beyond the Ashes. Produced by Ernie Haase and Wayne Haun, this album features eleven songs and some great harmonies. Like me, if this group are new to you, then Anthony Farcello, Dustin Doyle, and Casey Shepherd will soon win your favour. Their style takes in country, southern gospel and pop, and their songs are very appealing. ‘Songs like ‘So Amazing to Me’, ‘Oh The Thought That Jesus Loves Me’ and ‘Walking With My Eyes on Jesus’ are just pure enjoyable praise of our Saviour. ‘Living in the Moment’ bounces along, while the vocals really comes alive with the strong ballad ‘Peace in the Midst of the Storm’. I thought that ‘When Love Whispers Your Name’ sounded very much like Lonestar, and maybe that’s why I love this song so much. Quality throughout the track listing make this release a super album. 9/10.
