NFN Review Zone – JOSEPH HABEDANK: Change Is Coming (Daywind Music)

The name of Joseph Habedank will be one which is familiar with fans of Southern Gospel (hereafter SG) as he’s been a solo artist favourite on this scene for a number of years now; consistently winning SG Artist of the Year since 2017. Change Is Coming follows on from Joseph’s 2019 album release “Deeper Oceans” which was nominated for SG Album of the Year at the Dove Awards as well as a 2nd Grammy nomination. His style is probably best described as progressive with more of a contemporary pop feel to many of his releases. That being said though, the SG roots are certainly not lost in the mix with strong flavours evident in the style of delivery. ‘Thief in the Night’ is the opening number which immediately hints at the artist’s SG foundations with some impressive harmonies with a refrain asking “Are you ready?” in reference to Christ’s second coming. The song moves on in a more pop/rock oriented style, reminiscent of some late 80s/early 90s rock with Joseph displaying an impressive vocal range. Put these styles together with a very full musical arrangement and the results are very polished but for me, sounded too much like a Disney film soundtrack. The title track ‘Change is Coming’ is an upper mid-tempo track and possibly the album’s most pleasing track to fans of the genre in the subject matter as well as the musical arrangements. ‘Religion Isn’t Working’ winds the pace right back as a piano-led ballad with some excellent and powerful lyrics speaking about the deep desire for a personal relationship with Jesus as opposed to organised religion. The song builds towards the mid-section with a more rousing chorus which works well and there are of course the distinctive warbles of a Hammond organ in the background which one might associate with more traditional SG. ‘Jerico’ picks up the pace again with the pop/rock feel to it which I felt was the strongest track on the album with a strong drum beat, building the song nicely into an energetic declaration in the chorus. Certainly not one which would please the traditionalists but the most likely to make it onto my own playlist! ’24 Hours’ drops the pace again as a piano-led ballad which sounds like a very personal story of overcoming addiction. The orchestral arrangements can occasionally be a bit too much in the foreground, giving the song a hint of ‘film score’. ‘Child of the King’ was a tad samey and felt a little bland with neither music nor lyrics having a great impact. The ballad ‘Judas’ has some impactful lyrics focusing on the far-reaching grace of Jesus but again, the musical arrangements weren’t anything outstanding. The remaining tracks ‘Rebel With a Cause’, ‘Not Far From Home’ and ‘Rise Above Eden’ are not bad tracks at all but I’m afraid fall into the same trap which many progressive SG songs do…they all sound a touch generic. There is no doubting Joseph’s vocal gifts and he has a great range with smooth delivery. A couple of the stronger tracks may make it onto my personal playlist but as a whole album package, this one is not for me as it lacks some distinction to make it stand out. 7/10 Simon Redfern.

NFN review Zone – TIFFANY COBURN : You Are More. (Stow Town Records)

I, first, came across Tiffany’s great voice in 2019, and her “Near to the Heart” album. This project includes four of Gospel music’s top recording and touring artists: Point of Grace, Ernie Haase & Signature Sound, The Isaacs, and a powerful duet with GMA Southern Gospel Artist of the Year, Joseph Habedank. The opening “Matchless” features Point of Grace, and it’s a lovey, mid-paced song. Solo, Tiffany treats us to “What If It’s Us,” which tells of a world of hope, if we push past the limits, and catch a new vison of love! “You are More” is a ballad that celebrates the fact that each one of us, is a child of God. Lovely orchestration, and powerful vocals from Tiffany. The duet with Habedank (Then There’s Me) reminds me of something from a Disney movie. The vocals are delicate, at times, yet boom, when needed. I like the way that the singer can turn her hand to different types of songs. Featuring, The Isaacs, if you didn’t know, you’d swear that Tiffany was part of the group. The country/southern gospel, foot tapper, “Nobody Knows Better Than Me,” is a super sound, complete with some great banjo playing. There’s no denying Tiffany’s vocal prowess, but I didn’t think that this selection of songs were, overall, as good as her previous release. Nevertheless, 7/10.

Joseph Haberdank Celebrates #1 Hit Song

Southern Gospel/Gospel Roots artist JOSEPH HABERDANK recently celebrated his second career number 1 song on the Singing News Top 80 Chart. “Goliath” hit the number 1 position on the chart which will be featured in the May issue of Singing News Magazine. The powerful chart-topper also snagged the #1 spot on the Christian Music Weekly Chart for nine weeks in a row, as well as the Singing News POWER 50 Weekly Chart.

This is Habedank’s second #1 single from his 2019 Grammy and Dove Award-nominated recording Deeper Oceans. Penned by Michael Boggs, Jason Cox, and Joseph Habedank, “Shame On Me” hit the #1 spot on the Singing News Top 80 Chart in November 2019.

“Goliath,” written by Daniel Doss, Sue C. Smith, and Joseph Habedank, debuted on the Singing News Top 80 Chart in January of this year and quickly climbed to the top of the charts. This powerful song reminds listeners that there’s no weapon formed against them that is stronger than Jesus Christ.

The Erwins Release “This is Love” Album

This Is Love, the highly anticipated new studio recording from GRAMMY-nominated, Dove Award-winning StowTown recording group THE ERWINS, has now been released. The eight-song collection showcases a genre-spanning sound which has quickly become synonymous with the Texas-based siblings.

Hallmarked by The Erwins’ tight family harmonies wrapped in modern musical influences, This Is Love was produced and arranged by Wayne Haun and features tracks penned by Kenna Turner West, Joseph Habedank, Sue Smith, Tony Wood, Dixie Phillips and Kevin Winebarger, among others.

Debut single “The God I Know” is a soaring ballad proclaiming Christ’s peace to a pandemic-weary world, “The God I Know” embodies the project’s thematic inspiration found in 1 Corinthians 13:13, “And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.”

“We’ve bathed each of these songs in prayer as we selected and recorded them,” Keith Erwin shares. “It’s essential for us to consider three things with every project we record: we want to make sure Christ is magnified and glorified; that the sound of the album is authentic and something we personally enjoy; and that there’s a song for everyone. No matter someone’s age or what they’re facing in life, we hope our music reminds people of how much Jesus loves and cares for them.”
