NFN Music Review – WE ARE MESSENGERS : Saviour. (Curb/Word Entertainment)

We Are Messengers has over 400 million career streams, over 2.5 billion airplay audience, and a 14-week #1 billboard radio song (“Come What May”), along with six Top 5 and ten Top 10 Christian Airplay hits. Add to that, numerous sync placements in films and on TV, and you can understand that this band has quite a following. Choral voices introduce the title track, before Darren Mulligan’s vocals take over. The sound is very anthemic, as the lyrics proclaim “What a Saviour. Emmanuel has come, with hope for everyone.” ‘From Heaven To Earth’ takes parts of ‘Joy to the World’ and mashes it with the band’s own words. Musically, it’s a cross between Coldplay and Casting Crowns. Original songs like ‘God With Us’ and ‘Flesh and Bone’ celebrate the birth of Jesus, with the latter laying our hearts before Him. The closing ‘This is Jesus’ follows in similar vein, with some nice orchestral sounds accompanying the vocals. “Rejoice, He is with us; Rejoice, hope is here!” Well done guys, for some new, original, festive tunes.   8/10.

NFN Review Zone – AWAKEN MUSIC : Come What May.   (The Fuel Music)

This is the latest single from San Diego-based collective Awaken Music (formally Awaken Worship). The single declares a staunch, steadfast trust in the Lord regardless of circumstances. The anthemic new chorus is meant to encourage Christians in 2022 and harkens back to bold praises heard in songs like “Blessed Be Your Name.” The vocals come from Providence Cordell, whose voice had an instant appeal to me. It’s quite laid back, but still powerful enough to make every word clear to the listener. I. very much, liked the way that the backing music was sympathetic to her voice. That said, I did find the robotic percussion a little annoying.  “The first verse alludes to Jericho falling and talks about praising when everything is going right and victories are being had, and the second verse talks about praising in drought seasons when you are expecting God to move.” Yes, this is not just another mega-church production churned out like all the rest. This song stands out well from the crowd and is well worth a listen.   8/10.

Come what may

Nothings gonna stop my praise

Not afraid, I will stand tall with my hands raised

Hallelujah, Hallelujah

He has overcome

So come what may

Nothings gonna steal my praise

(From the “Come What May” chorus.)

Like its recent Lionheart (Deluxe) album, “Come What May” was produced by GRAMMY Award-nominated Stephen Blake Kanicka (Kanye West, for KING & COUNTRY, Danny Gokey) and mixed by David Cook (Chris Tomlin, Zach Williams, Shawn Mendes).

And like the album, the new single represents Awaken Church’s fierce stance on the importance of gathering together as believers to encourage and support one another. In August 2020, the church became one of the first to open its doors in California after pandemic lockdowns in order to support and minister to their community that was wrestling with rising cases of drug abuse, suicide and a host of other mental and physical ailments. Growing from 8,000 to 10,000 members during this time, and ministering to 25,000 people online, the church found courage and strength in the lyrics and melodies being created by its worship team.

“We were one of very few churches in America that really said, ‘hey wait a minute, the church is the most essential institution on the planet, we can’t shut down, our community needs it too badly,’” remembers Yeager. “Our church is really big on the power of actually physically speaking out the precepts, promises and principles of God.”

As new melodies are carried out into the world, Awaken Music hopes people will find encouragement to join in the outworking of God’s plan, being active and hopeful in their mission and purpose as Christians.

NFN Review Zone – WE ARE MESSENGERS : Wholehearted. (Curb/Word Entertainment)

Irish American band We Are Messengers are a rag tag group of friends consisting of Darren Mulligan (lead vocals), Kyle Williams (guitar), Drew Kerxton (drums) and Raul Aguilar (bass) who still believe that it’s possible to change the world. The band identify with the hurting, the outsider and the underdog, and offer songs like an olive branch to society’s marginalized. With a sound that reminds me of The Script or The Waterboys, there’s a driving rhythm to ‘Come What May,’ and a similar feel to a song about turning the other cheek, ‘Now It’s Our Turn.’ Darren Mulligan’s voice is perfect for these songs, and shares the vocals on the slower ‘God You Are’ with Josh Baldwin. The tempo picks up again with the smashing ‘Million Miles Away,’ and the excellent ‘Keep the Faith.’ I, simply love the line in the latter; “Listen, child listen. You’re a citizen of God on high.”  The more I listened to this album, the more I enjoyed it. Production is first class, with instruments sounding crisp and clear throughout. Of the bonus tracks, ‘Come What May’ gets another outing, with Cory Asbury joining in. A surprise to me was the acoustic duet between Mulligan and country star, Vince Gill. A simple song, but a good one!  So, overall, this is a quality release with so many appealing songs within. We Are Messengers certainly get the message of God across really well.   9/10.
